was gm-chrysler didn't have enough money to pay suppliers or employees, and by the time the government could have negotiated guaranteed with anybody that might step up to make a loan, those companies were out of the business. it is reality and he's showing why republicans never say i am sorry. it is ridiculous. >> steve, is rick right, that bankings were so bad shape they would have gone in bankruptcy and no one would have lent them money. >> in the fall of the 2008 there was a panic on government guarantees. but general motors and chrysler should have gone in controrsey. equity funds would be willing to get the assets. bankrupt nation and equity funds in greece are saying this is low price and we are come nothing and buying their bonds. >> even bain capital turned it down. the president said if we listened to romney you are buying foreign cars. what about chrysler isn't that a foreign car? >> of course we would be buying. >> is chrysler a foreign car company it is owned by fiat. >> all of the companies are world car companies. we are a global economy. the issue is should government gu

that focuses on chrysler building jeeps in china. now we learned a bit about that from stu varney yesterday. in a moment we will have the truth and the fiction in the fight over this controversial message. as of today for a moment now, though we are going to listen to president obama out making his final argument on the campaign trail. >> we see neighbors helps neighbors cope with tragedy. we see leaders of different political parties working to fix what's broken, not to score political points. we see a spirit that says no matter how bad a storm is, no matter how tough times are, we are going to make it because we are all in this together. [cheers and applause] >> we rise and fall as one nation and as one people. [cheers and applause] >> and that spirit, ohio has guided this country along its improbable journey for more than two centuries, and it's also guided us and carried us through the trials and tribulations of the last four years. in 2008 we were in the middle of two wars and the worst economic crisis since the great depression. today our businesses have created nearly 5 pine 5 millio
sold chrysler to italians that are going to build jeeps in china. a lot of push back from the obama campaign. the ad was dismissed by our last guest. i want to get your thoughts. guest: chrysler has admitted they are going to open a plant in china. they are going to manufacture jeeps in italy they are going to ship to china. why are we not manufacturing them in ohio? i think that is the issue that mitt romney, governor romney, was attempting to promote. the fact of the matter is that we have a substantial loss of automobile manufacturing jobs in ohio between 2008 when the 2011. we have not recovered some of those jobs. some of those jobs, we have recovered. to say that chrysler is not going to be producing jeeps in china is incorrect, because they have admitted that they are going to open a plant in china. they are in the process of doing the right now. >> you think governor romney could have done a better job in how he presented that ad? it has gotten a lot of a pushcart. vice-president biden called it "flagrantly dishonest." he said, >guest: i am not going to get into individual a
. the real jeep news that day was actually that chrysler announced it was adding 1100 new jobs in the u.s. here. making jeeps in detroit. jeep grand cherokees. and chrysler says it could hire almost as many people at another plant in warren, michigan. in ohio crisler is investing half a billion dollars in its toledo plant and hiring 1100 workers. but mitt romney got up that said defiance, ohio, and said he read somewhere that jeep is moving all of its production jobs to china. all of them. that's ridiculous. what is he talking about? it's embarrassing for mr. romney, right? why on god's great campaign trail would mitt romney get up in front of 12,000 people in ohio and tell them the auto bailout actually hasn't helped you at all. your jobs making jeeps are going to china. i read it somewhere. where's this story he said he read somewhere? we found it. here it is. he was apparently trolling the nether regions of the right-wing press. he found it on a washington examiner blog post, which reported, quote, jeep, an obama favorite, looks to shift production to china. a move that would crash t
by lee iacoca and the detroit news. obama sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps? china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> romney: i'm mitt romney and i approve this message. >> bill: james what is the romney campaign's response to the fact checking? >> they haven't spoken publicly about it. they have kept it very low-key, i think they hoped that no one would really notice. there is unquestionably damage done to mitt romney because of his opposition to the auto bailout. the obama campaign is aggressively running ads around romney saying let detroit go bankrupt. >> bill: uh-huh. >> and romney knows he needs to deal with it. yesterday romney had three events, spoke about 25 minutes at each of them didn't say a word about the bailout or anything like that, and at each event any obama response was the auto bailout. and chrysler denies the claim in that ad that they are going to be sending jeep jobs to china. and portman introducing romney noted that he had supported the auto bailout when it happened and then made that whole pitch which
the position that romney took, and then chrysler's and jeep's response to what he said about china. then his last line is wrong then, dishonest now. i think that plays into the narrative that people have for romney. you know, there are still some undecided voters out there. this is going to hurt. this is going to hurt him. it's just a blatant lie that i think it will be effect, and the obama game is countering that, and i think it will be helpful in the last week. cenk i think this may be where he jumps the shark. this is where he gets way out over his skis on an issue that is so personal to people in ohio and so blatantly false and not rebutted by biden or obama or clinton or me or those up in toledo. it's been rebutted by chrysler and jeep and they smacked him right out of the gate. i think that will have an affect on the voters in ohio and those who may not have made a decision yet. >> cenk: tim ryan from ohio, thank you for joining us. >> great to be with you. >> cenk: thanks, michael, as well. we'll have more from michael a little bit later. next up we're going to discuss whether obama
economic news can have undesirable consequences. this week chrysler will add 1100 workers in detroit. the plant hassed a workers on overtime for months, is now adding a third crew so they can be operational for more hours in the day. it's hard to imagine these new jobs without chrysler and chrysler without the auto rescue. but because the new vehicles, these workers will be making our suvs, so while the comeback is good in the short term, it's only good on for all of us in the long time if the industry goes through a revolution that dramatically increases the efficiency and reduces the emissions of the cars it produces. want to find out what my guests think you should know for the coming week -- >> i think one of the things that a we've been discussing has been there's more drips out of the benghazi situation. there was a cia annex he is that asked for military intervention and were denied three times. unclear whether it was the pentagon, the president. who those. but i think we'll see more drips from that next week and that will continue to hit the headlines. >> we've covered bengha
by michael j murphy. host: more political headlines. here is the free press, gm and chrysler, romney is wrong. republican presidential candidate mitt romney has broadened his attack on a barack obama's auto industry restructuring, implying a general motors used aid to hire more workers in china than the united states. it goes on to say that gm quickly defended its performance and said that romney is wrong on this. and here is the wall street journal on that story. even as mr. romney and mr. obama canceled a political appearances tuesday, the two campaigns -- escalated a heated exchange over mitt romney suggestion that the president also bailout had benefited china. he returned to pennsylvania in hopes of returning the momentum. the story wall street journal goes on to talk about that many have come out including those in the auto industry to say that the governor was wrong on this ad, that he is running in the state of ohio. we will talk about that more in about 10 minutes when reid wilson of the hot line joins us to talk about october surprises and all things campaign 2012. democratic caller
-- the chrysler owners are investing in china to boost the market there. they are not cutting back in ohio. they are investing more in the toledo area chrysler planned. the romney campaign has been asked about it. and they stand by it. the suggestion is clear that ohio might lose jobs. host: let's play a little bit of the radio ad that talks about this. >> barack obama says he saved the auto industry, but for who? ohio or china? gm cut 15,000 american jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars in china which means 15,000 more jobs for china. chrysler plans to start making jeeps in china. what happened to the promises made to autoworkers in ohio? this same hard-working men and women who were told the auto bailout would help them. mitt romney would welcome the auto industry. mitt romney, he will stand up for the auto industry in ohio. not china. host: so that is a radio ad that we were talking about. this has been on television ads across all media markets as well. guest: what i have seen in northeast ohio, yes, there is a version of that that runs. it has drawn a strong rebuke
production to china. >> chrysler c.e.o. said it's simply not true. >> will you endorse president obama? >> yes. his entire strategy is a in flame others. >> obama: we're all in this together. we rise or fall at one nation. >> cenk: hey jeb he wants to blame your brother because it's your brother's fault. he's the schmuck that got us into the recession in the first place. kind of convenient for you to forget. president obama is talking about how we all have to stick together in times of emergencies like we had in sandy speaking in wisconsin. >> obama: when disaster strikes we see all the petty differences that consume us in normal times all seem to melt away. there are no democrats or republicans during a storm. there are just fellow americans. >> [ cheers and applause ] >> cenk: all right now that's a very good speech there. it's true. it also helps his cause. i notice something during that peach. let's show you the picture of the president there in wisconsin. normally they don't have the presidential seal at the podium, they have his campaign slogan. now they have it at the podium and
chrysler is going to move from jeep jobs from here to china. romney is firing back saying the way the president has managed the bailout has a failure. it's exposed taxpayers to a $25 billion loss and these companies are expanding production overseas. that's from the romney camp. they believe this could be lead to jobs being shipped overseas and they believe the ad is accurate. they believe what romney is trying do is save ohio because if he can't ring ohio, they are convinced the president will be re-elected. >> most of the analysts agree with that. four days to go, what's the mood inside the president's campaign? >> it's interesting. he unveiled a slightly new stump speech where he was fiery, and he was defiant saying if he had a second term he's not going to give into republicans on cutting taxes for the rich, major spending reductions either. take a look how he framed it. >> i am a long ways away from giving up on this fight! i got a lot of fight left in me. i don't get tired. i don't grow weary. i hope you aren't tired either, ohio. i hope you aren't tired either. >> now, as t
had allowed chrysler, which owns jeep, to move jobs to china. then not satisfied with that, since fiat owns part -- he said -- i can't make this up. he said that the president had allowed the italians to move jobs to china. >> all right. you're listening there to bill clinton. he's in indian river high school there in chesapeake, virginia, campaigning on behalf of the president who is campaigning in the swing state of ohio. of course, if you want to see any more of clinton's speech, go to cnn.com/live right now. all right. now to the latest on superstorm sandy. there are reports that at least 22 million gallons of gas are headed to the northeast to relieve in the shortages. gas rationing got under way in new jersey in 12 counties in an effort to cut down on wait times. people there had been waiting in miles along lines for hours to gas up their cars and get fuel for their generators. >>> all right. some voters in new jersey will face a pretty big election day challenge because of superstorm sandy. five days after the storm polling station managers are working to make sure the voting go
gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to the italians who will build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> reporter: john kasich said the bailout impact on ohio has been overstated. >> when you take into account the companies and suppliers you're up 400 jobs. we didn't grow ohio's economy on just one industry. >> but his predecessor pushed back. >> i believe that the table was set by president obama and ohioans recognize that and i think that's why the president is going to win ohio. >> reporter: both campaigns in the wake of sandy have called off fundraising, emails and any fundraising events in any of the affected states. mitt romney's campaign put out word he spoke with the republican governors of states impacted on the storm,er name dropped chris christie and bob mcdonnell. the president will be in the situation room dealing with fema and that fallout. this is the october surprise but we don't know what it all means in eight days. savannah? >> chuck todd, thank you. joe scarborough and mika are hosts of "morning joe." >> one thing we do know
companies through ban kruptcy. it was obama who took gm and chrysler through bankruptcy. it was mitt romney who did provide for loan guarantees. every fact-checker who looked has said that barack obama was wrong and was not telling the truth. this is what is most important, with the communities depending on autos. the policies that will be good for the auto industry, for the state of ohio. [applause] he wants sensible regulations, for the auto companies and to make sure we can get the auto companies on their feet and make sure trade is fair. he wants worker retraining to work better. that will keep auto jobs in ohio. and strengthen the industry. that is what mitt romney will do. in the fourth're quarter and the score is tied. zone.i nthe ren the red the momentum is on our side. will we be sure we take mitt romney over the goal line in the next eight days? ladies and gentlemen, the next president of the united states, mitt romney. >> thank you. flash point, a romney tv ad running in ohio making this claim about gm. >> obama took chrysler and gm into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians that are going to build jeeps in china. >> reporter: campaigning with former president clinton vice president biden blasted the ad as false. >> chrysler has felt obliged to go public and say there is no truth. they say jeep has no intentions of shifting production of its jeep models out of north america to china. >> reporter: while mitt romney is technically not campaigning today, he is doing a storm relief event, savannah, in the state of ohio. >> chuck, and a lot of folks are asking us this morning, is there a possibility with this widespread power outages that could last days if not weeks, is there a chance the election day itself could be delayed? >> it's very unlikely. look, the presidential election day is something that is set in the constitution. now, states run electrics, and they can decide to postpone if they wanted to. it's happened before in new york city, of course, postponed in new york city elections on 9/11 on the day that
jobs, gm is back, chrysler is the fastest-growing auto maker in the nation, what is their response? it is outrageous, their response. in the last hours of this campaign, they have become truly desperate. i came from ohio -- they are running an ad in ohio and the following -- this is the god's truth. the ad they are running says the following -- it says that barack obama bankrupting the automobile industry so that it could be sold to the italians -- i do not know they have against the italians -- sold to the italians so they could offshore to china. that is what they are saying -- i am not making this up. ladies and gentlemen, here is the cynical part. just imagine, your from the upper midwest, my state is delaware, which was one of the biggest automobile producing states in the country. after all those guys and families have been through, hard-working folks working their whole lives, through no fault of their own because of the policies of the last administration in the last year before got elected, 400,000 automobile jobs lost. here is what is more important -- 400,000 people drop

. >> when chrysler and general motors changed their facilities we had a choice to make. we could fight hard to put people back to work and get people making things in delaware or we could give up. if his approach were followed what we would have is an empty building, it became factory, and a resting refinery. i was going to fight for those workers and i will continue to. what i was running for governor i could not have imagined that lehman brothers was about to collapse or that pillars of our economy were about to close down and lay off their workers. that is what happened. that changed everything. i am proud of how we pull together. we're a state of neighbors. we have significantly more work to do. we're going to do it and that is why i ask the people of delaware for their confidence and vote. >> thank you. david wilson, thank you as well. and to our audience, we appreciate your attention as we talk about the issues in the race for governor. on behalf of delaware first media and the university of delaware center for political communications, thank you for being with us and good night. >> w
